The best way to go about getting a license to serve liquor is by getting to know your state laws regarding the same. In the United States licenses for liquor are issued by state. Usually there is a bit of a confusion surrounding a liquor license and a liquor permit. Though there is a slight functional overlap between the two as both are regulatory devices of the government to oversee liquor sale and consumption but, a liquor license is issued to retailers and a permit is issued top wholesalers and industry production tiers.

Another difference between the two is that liquor licenses are issued by the municipality but liquor permits are given by the state.

To get a liquor license the applying candidate must be of the right age. Normally in most countries the average age for a person to be eligible to apply for a liquor license is twenty one years. Some states require a seller’s permit to get a liquor license. This permit is issued by the Department of Revenue mostly.

There are three main categories of liquor licenses. The first category is a Retail Liquor License. This is also called a Class A liquor license. With this license the owner can sell alcoholic beverages and malt beverages as well as wine. This type of license is normally given to convenience stores and grocery stores that sell alcohol.

The second class of liquor license is a special events liquor license. With this license one is allowed to sell liquor at a public gathering or any such social event such as a fair, holiday event etc. Such licenses or permits are handed out for use only for a specific time frame.

The third category of licenses for liquor is the bar and grill liquor license. This license is required for an establishment that has a bar or has a lounge facility. This license gives the establishment the authority to sell liquor to any individual who is of legal drinking age according to the state laws.

The individual purchasing this liquor has to be seated in the bar or lounge to be permitted to consume this liquor. The cost of the bar and grill licenses are usually much higher than the other two categories.

Irrespective of the license, liquor can be served only according to the state laws and according to the regulations of the license. Being in violation of any of these laws and regulations acquires heavy penalty by the law.
