Get to know your local wine shop. This is important because each one is different. The prices will be different, as well as the bottles that are offered. If you’re just starting to learn about wine, you probably want to stay away from expensive wine shops. Find the perfect shop for your needs.
Attend wine tastings. They will force you to examine all manner of wines, and perhaps you will find an attraction to something new. Make the wine tasting a social event. Invite your friends and family over to taste the wine. Enjoy a new pastime and enrich your friendships, all at once.
If you are really into it, build a wine cellar, it is worth it. The more expensive the wines you own, the more important a cellar is. The cost of the cellar will more than pay for itself when it keeps your expensive wines from going bad.
Your wine should be served at the ideal serving temperature to keep the flavor at its maximum potential. Red wines, for example are the best when you serve them near 65 degrees. In order to let the wine warm in the glass, start it at 58 degrees. With white wine, go further down to about 47 degrees. Serving white wine too warm dulls the flavor.
Very few people are allergic to sulfites, so don’t be overly concerned about the warning labels on most wine bottles. Every wine contains sulfites, but only those produced in America have the warning. Sulfites can be a problem for some, but allergic reactions are not very common. So, don’t be afraid of sulfites unless you have had problems with them in the past.
Keep reds and whites in their respective glasses. Whites are best in a narrow wine glass to prevent warm air from making its way to the surface. Red wines need wider glasses with large mouths. That allows for plenty of air to touch the wine surface, warming the wine and developing flavor as it works with the air.
If you are going to buy wine for tailgating, buy one that has a screwtop. This option is far more casual and convenient; there is no need for a corkscrew, and the bottle can be opened quickly and easily between pours. In addition, you can easily reseal your screw top bottle whenever you are done. A cork bottle isn’t as easy to reseal, and its seal isn’t as secure.
